Tsunami warning lifted for Hawaii after powerful quake strikes Japan

7.1-magnitude temblor hits off coast of southern Japan, triggering tsunami alerts

A 7.1-magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of southern Japan on Thursday, triggering tsunami alerts for the region. The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) said the quake struck at 4:42 p.m. local time (1:42 a.m. ET) and was centered about 300 kilometers (186 miles) south of the city of Kagoshima. The quake had a depth of 10 kilometers (6 miles).

The JMA issued a tsunami warning for the Amami Islands, Tokara Islands, Osumi Islands, and parts of the Kyushu region. The warning warned of waves up to 1 meter (3 feet) high. However, the warning was lifted about three hours later.

There were no immediate reports of damage or injuries. The quake was felt across southern Japan, including in the city of Fukuoka, where buildings shook for several seconds.

The quake is the latest in a series of powerful earthquakes to hit Japan in recent months. In March, a 6.1-magnitude quake struck the Fukushima region, causing several injuries and damaging buildings. In February, a 7.3-magnitude quake struck off the coast of Miyagi Prefecture, causing minor damage.
