Acrylic Nails: A Guide to the Materials and Process
What Are Acrylic Nails?
Acrylic nails are artificial nail enhancements made of acrylic plastic. Acrylic is the generic name given to the type of plastic made from a chemical called methacrylate. There are many types of acrylic resins, but the type used in nail enhancements is called polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA).
How Are Acrylic Nails Created?
Acrylic nails are created by mixing a powder polymer (usually clear, but the powders come in a range of colors) and a liquid monomer into a dough-like consistency. The dough is then applied to the natural nail and sculpted into the desired shape. Once the acrylic mixture hardens, it forms a strong, durable bond to the natural nail.
