University of Connecticut men's basketball head coach Dan Hurley has withdrawn from consideration for the Los Angeles Lakers head coaching position, according to The Athletic.
Hurley, who had emerged as the frontrunner for the Lakers job, reportedly informed the team of his decision on Friday morning.
"After careful consideration, I have decided to withdraw my name from consideration for the Los Angeles Lakers head coaching position," Hurley said in a statement. "I am committed to the University of Connecticut and our players, and I believe that we have a bright future together."
Hurley's decision is a major setback for the Lakers, who are looking to replace Frank Vogel after a disappointing season.
Hurley, 51, has been the head coach at Connecticut since 2018. He has led the Huskies to two NCAA Tournament appearances, including a Sweet 16 berth in 2022.
The Lakers are now expected to turn their attention to other candidates, including Mike Brown, Tyronn Lue, and Mark Jackson.
